Routine or Change?

Routine is defined as a “sequencing of actions regularly followed.” An easy definition for such a powerful tool.

Why do we crave routine? Why do we feel the need to follow regular action?

We might say that routine helps us to keep a continuous track of day-to day decisions, convincing ourselves and others that we are happy with what we are doing, and what we want. The truth is that routine can often be a cover for what we really want, it can be used as a camouflage tool to blend in. We can create a habit of a working routine, one that does not motivate or engage us anymore.

As a head-hunter, I recognise that routine in the work environment is very important and essentially the hook that keeps people from trying new experiences. Many people may reject opportunities because they are scared to try something different to what they are used to.

Immanuel Kant’s neighbours in Königsberg say that we should “Decide what you want or ought to do with the day”, but Auden guides “The surest way to discipline passion is to discipline time: decide what you want or ought to do during the day, then always do it at the same moment every day, and passion will give you no trouble.” These quotes give food for thought, and raises another question in my mind – how many years have you been falling behind on your New Year’s resolution of getting a new job or a new passion?

We fear the unknown, and convince ourselves that we are happy, but instead, we may be comfortable and complacent. We can miss out on incredible opportunities because of the fear of change – if you are not open to new possibilities, how will you know if you are on the right path for you?

The hardest way to break a routine, if we want to get results, is to persevere until we get to a point where a candidate realises that every day has become monotonous and too comfortable. This is the right time for a head-hunter to start negotiating.

The initial approach should be:

  • Give me three good reasons why you wouldn’t want to talk to a head-hunter about new and exciting opportunities that you might not be aware of?
  • Give me three good reasons why you would want to stay in a job that gives you no satisfaction – are you only staying because you feel safe?
  • Give me three good reasons why you don’t want a new challenge and a change?

Our job as head-hunters is not to waste your time. It is to provide you with a pair of binoculars that will enable you to see that the ocean is wide and it has plenty of islands to explore, and that there is a big world of unknown opportunities! We can help you find the right job that gives you the tools to keep you motivated, eager to learn and keep your mind stimulated.
